September 1966:

A New Beginning in Education: The Opening of Sunshine Drive School –

In September 1966, a major step forward in inclusive education was taken when the Sunshine Drive School officially opened its doors. Constructed by the Ministry of Education and funded and operated by Inclusion Chilliwack Society (then known under a previous name), the school was a groundbreaking initiative in the province’s approach to educating children with developmental disabilities.

At a time when children with special needs were often excluded from the regular school system, the Sunshine Drive School offered a dedicated space for learning, growth, and community. It stood as a symbol of progress—moving away from institutional care and toward education that was rooted in compassion, dignity, and opportunity.

The school not only provided essential educational services but also demonstrated the power of collaboration between government and community organizations. It served as a model for future programs and helped pave the way for more inclusive educational practices across British Columbia.

The opening of the Sunshine Drive School remains a proud chapter in the history of Inclusion Chilliwack Society, reflecting its long-standing commitment to innovation and advocacy in support of children with developmental disabilities.
