A Global Commitment: The Birth of International Day of Persons with Disabilities –
In November 1992, following the conclusion of the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons (1983–1992), the UN made a historic proclamation: December 3 would be recognized worldwide as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

This declaration marked a global commitment to promoting the rights, dignity, and well-being of people with disabilities. The day was established to raise awareness about disability issues, celebrate achievements, and advocate for inclusion and accessibility in every aspect of society.

For organizations like Inclusion Chilliwack Society, this international recognition reinforced the values at the heart of the community living movement—ensuring that people with disabilities are not only supported but fully included as equal citizens.

Since then, December 3 has become a day of reflection, celebration, and action across the globe, reminding us of the ongoing work needed to achieve a truly inclusive world.
