Our Journey for Inclusion: Celebrating 70 Years of Innovation –

ICS was proud to co-present a powerful and thought-provoking exhibition at the Chilliwack Museum titled Our Journey for Inclusion: 70 Years of Innovation. The exhibition opened on January 25, 2024, and ran until June 8, commemorating ICS’s 70th anniversary and highlighting the evolving history of inclusion for people with developmental disabilities in British Columbia.

Developed in partnership with Inclusion BC, the exhibit explored the complex and often difficult history of institutionalization of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Through archival materials, personal stories, and interactive displays, visitors were invited to reflect on the past while celebrating the progress made toward a more inclusive and accessible future.

The exhibition documented the systemic barriers that once isolated people from their communities and celebrated the courageous individuals, families, and advocates who worked tirelessly to break down those barriers. It showcased the transformative journey from segregation to inclusion—both in Chilliwack and across the province.

At its core, Our Journey for Inclusion was a tribute to resilience, advocacy, and the power of community. It encouraged visitors to consider how far we’ve come and inspired continued efforts to build a society where everyone belongs.

Whether longtime supporters of ICS or newcomers to the conversation around inclusion, attendees left with a deeper understanding of the past and a renewed commitment to shaping a more inclusive future.
